The first specimen was lot 11604 in Heritage sale 332 (Long Beach, September 2003), where it sold for $805. The catalog description noted, "Republic 5 Francos 1858, AU55 NGC, boldly struck details and light attractive toning." This type was struck this year only and has always been rare and popular. No other five francos is recorded for Ecuador. Soon after this coin was issued, the Quito mint was shuttered. No further Ecuadorean coins were issued until 1872 and those were struck in England on contract.
