Sedwick sale 9, lot 1526

Ecuador, having secured her independence from Colombia in 1830, set about issuing her own coinage in 1833. The first quarter reales were emitted in 1842; this type, with the head of liberty, appeared 1849-62. This, the final date, is by far the rarest and marked the last issue for Ecuador until decimal coins appeared in 1872. This specimen was lot 1526 in Sedwick sale 9 (Fort Lauderdale, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $15,525. The catalog description[1] noted, "Quito, Ecuador, 1/4 real, 1862GJ, extremely rare, encapsulated NGC AU-50. Lustrous and choice, much nicer strike than usual, and quite rare (about 3 known), with various re-punched letters in the legend, edge slightly crude (as made), another classic cuartillo rarity like the 1842 offered in lot 1515. Pedigreed to the Carlos Janson collection of Ecuadorian cuartillos."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.667 fine silver.

Catalog reference: KM-36.
