This specimen was lot 40490 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $7,475. The catalog description[1] noted, "ECUADOR. 2 Reales, 1857-GJ. PCGS Genuine--Secure Holder. EXTREMELY RARE. This the second confirmed example that we know of, the other being pierced at 12 o'clock." The other known date for this type is from 1862, also very rare. By contrast, the 1857 four reales is fairly common.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rare. The SCWC lists this as unique.

Specification: 5.5-6.0 g, 0.667 fine silver.
