Ecuador 1841-MV S 8 escudos
This specimen was lot 11366 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $20,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Rare Ecuador 1841 8 Escudos. ECUADOR. 1841-MVS 8 Escudos. Quito mint. MS-61 (PCGS). Boldly lustrous light yellow gold. Superb visual appeal for the assigned grade, well struck and showing exceptional reflective flash on the reverse. Some light marks and hairlines are noted, short horizontal scratch behind the portrait. Both sides are framed with bold denticles around the entire circumference. This is the first year of the smaller diameter of this design type. This issue was not present in the Eliasberg holdings, the only date of this design type not included in that wide-ranging collection. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Ponterio and Associates' sale of January 2004, lot 1175." This type was struck 1841-43 with a similar design (KM 23.1) preceding it 1838-41. Like all predecimal Ecuadorean gold coins, it is rare.
