Dominican Republic 1951 1/2 peso
This specimen was lot 23730 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $558.13. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 1/2 Peso 1951, MS63 NGC, fully brilliant and attractive, a premium coin for this certified grade. Very scarce date in this quality." The specimen shown was struck for the Dominican Republic towards the end of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. The type was struck 1937-61; this date is common up thru Extremely Fine.
