Dominican Republic 1939 peso
This specimen was lot 23731 in Heritage sale 3024 (Chicago, April 2013), where it sold for $998.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Peso 1939, MS62 NGC, an attractive mint state example of this key date with original surfaces and full mint luster. There is one contact mark on the cheek of the Indian which apparently limited the certified grade, but the overall eye appeal is consistent with a higher designation. Rare in mint state!" The specimen shown was struck for the Dominican Republic during the early years of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. The type was struck 1939 and 1952; this date is the scarcer of the two dates.
