Sedwick Treasure auction 26, lot 864

This specimen was lot 864 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $190.40. The catalog description[1] noted, "Dominican Republic (struck in Philadelphia), 25 centavos, 1939, NGC AU 55, ex-Rudman. Nice luster and minimal marks, faint surface hairlines on obverse. Pedigreed to the Isaac Rudman collection." The specimen shown was struck for the Dominican Republic during the early years of the regime of Rafael Trujillo, among the more brutal of Latin America's long roll of bloodthirsty dictators. Soon after his assassination in 1961, the capital, which he had renamed Ciudad Trujillo, reverted to its former name, Santo Domingo. The type was struck 1937-61; this is the key date.
