Dominican Republic 1891-A 5 centesimos
This specimen was lot 71321 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $110. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 5 Centesimos, 1891-A. Paris Mint. Republic. PCGS MS-64 Brown Gold Shield. Quality rarely encountered for the issue, this blazing near Gem offers robust brown surfaces with some hints of lustrous red peeking through from below." Coinage for the Dominican Republic was sporadic during the nineteenth century, reflecting the political and fiscal chaos obtaining there. The dies for this one year type bear the Paris mintmark ("A") and French privy marks but it is believed the coins were actually struck in Philadelphia. This denomination, modeled on a French bronze ten centimes, was not used again.
Recorded mintage: 400,000 plus proofs.
Specification: bronze, 5 g.
