This specimen was lot 50400 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $764. The catalog description[1] noted, "DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. 50 Centesimos, 1891-A. NGC MS-65. Attractive multi-colored toning. NGC MS-65." Coinage for the Dominican Republic was sporadic during the nineteenth century, reflecting the political and fiscal chaos obtaining there. The dies for this one year type bear the Paris mintmark ("A") and French privy marks but it is believed the coins were actually struck elsewhere. The next issue of an equivalently sized coin is the ten centavos of 1897 (KM 13), which was only .350 fine silver.

Recorded mintage: 150,000.

Specification: 2.5 g, 0.835 fine silver, .072 troy oz ASW.

Catalog reference: KM 10.
