Denmark 1747-A 2 speciedaler Dav-1298
This specimen was lot 30087 in Heritage sale 3089 (Dallas, TX, January 2021), where it sold for $8,400. The catalog description[1] noted, "Denmark. Frederick V "Coronation" 2 Speciedaler 1747-A MS64 NGC, Copenhagen mint, Utterly magnificent to say the least, and almost certainly ranking as one of the finest quality survivors of this scarce double speciedaler to come down to us, a quick flick of the wrist unleashing waves of glassy champagne luster over smoky fields free of all but the most unobtrusive of marks. The sole 2 speciedaler type produced in Denmark during the 18th century, likely owing to rampant inflation across the continent, a fact which alone could easily cause numerous surface or edge dings as a result of wider circulation, the issue most often comes with clear rub across the highpoints. Perhaps just slightly weak atop the very peaks of the design, this almost becomes a moot point for this selection whose medallic and Prooflike qualities are legion, and bolstered by a prominent frosting on the canopy scene that graces the obverse. Though exceeded by a single piece at NGC, we would note that the coin on offer here ranks a full two points above the Millennia, Irving Goodman example, and undoubtedly will inspire fierce bidding when it crosses the auction block as such. From the Cape Coral Collection of European Crowns." We find double speciedalers of Denmark to be exceedingly rare. This is only the second one we have posted. It accompanied a single speciedaler (Dav-1299) and some kroner (Dav-1300 and -1300A).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
