Denmark SB817-20291r.jpg

This specimen was lot 20291 in Stack's Bowers ANA Auction (Denver, CO, August 2017), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "DENMARK. Ducat, 1746. Frederik V (1746-66). NGC AU-55. Struck from gold acquired from the Danish Gold Coast in the gulf of Guinea now present day southeast Ghana. The reverse depicts the port of Fort Christiansborg (Osu Castle) to left and ship right. The first substantial fort built in the area in the 1660's by Denmark-Norway which changed hands several times before Ghana finally gained independence. In 1693 the ethnic Akwamu tribe had taken possession of the fort by overpowering the occupants while disguised as merchants. About one year later the tribal leader Assameni sold the fort back to the Danes in 1694 for 50 Marks of gold, but retained possession of the city. The Akwamu were not kind to the city and the English had reported the state of disrepair in 1722. Later in the century vast improvements were made, but the structural improvements were not made until 1824. Well struck and lustrous. Lovely orange tone radiates from the devices with an attractive honey-gold tone in the open areas and the tops of the devices. Quite the treat for Danish collectors that tells an interesting story." The king did not mint ducats every year but in 1746 he had six different ducats issued, all rare: KM 547, 548, 549, 550, 551 and 552 (shown here).

Recorded mintage: unknown but scarce.

Specification: 3.49 g, .979 fine gold.

Catalog reference: Fr-264; KM-552; Sieg-28; H-7.
