Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection, lot 1101

The first specimen was lot 1101 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €12,000 (about US$13,299 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"Beautiful Nearly-Choice Ducat with Stunning Luster, DENMARK. Ducat, 1672/1. Copenhagen Mint. Christian V. NGC MS-62. Mintmaster: Gotfred Krüger (GK). Engraver: Jeremias Hercules. A VERY SCARCE coin in a highly desirable state of preservation, offering sunny and bright luster. Bold details and limited handling round out this example's attributes, and make it certain to capture much attention. Ex: Countship of Brahesminde Collection (Private Sale - 1922). Ex: Peter v. Hemmert Collection (Copenhagen - 2/1807) Lot # 122."

The second specimen was lot 2021 in Künker sale 439 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €3,400 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"DÄNEMARK, KÖNIGREICH Christian V., 1670-1699. Dukat 1672 (Jahreszahl im Stempel aus 1671 geändert), Kopenhagen. Münzmeister Gottfried Krüger. GOLD. RR Leicht gewellt, kl. Schrötlingsfehler, vorzüglich. Exemplar der Sammlung Münzen und Medaillen aus adeligem Privatbesitz. (kingdom of Denmark, Christian V, 1670-99, ducat of 1672, Copenhagen mint, 1672/1 overdate. Very rare, slightly wavy, light scratches, extremely fine.)"

This type was struck 1671-74, all with initials GK. Some have "CHRISTIAN V", as on the first specimen, and some have "CHRIST V" on the obverse (KM 340.2, see the second specimen).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.49 g, 0.979 fine gold, 25.5 mm diameter, the first specimen 3.45 g, the second specimen 3,39 g.
