note no initials "GK"

This specimen was lot 10258 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €1,200 (about US$1,251). The catalog description[2] noted, "DENMARK. Krone, 1669. Frederik III. NGC EF-45. An extraordinary example of this rare "Mysteriekrone". Mysteriekroner (literally 'Mystery Crowns') are a larger group of contemporary, foreign professional imitations/counterfeits of crowns from the Danish-Norwegian mints in Copenhagen, Christiania, and Glückstadt 1653-1679. The exact place or places of production are not known, but everything points to northern Germany as the place of production, possibly in the non-royal parts of Schleswig-Holstein. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." We are cataloguing this as if it were genuine, one of a type struck 1667 and 1669. Kroner for 1669 include KM 274/Dav-3581, KM 276/Dav-3582, KM 285/Dav-3581B (no initials, shown here) and KM 306/Dav-3584. None are priced above Very Fine. Most Danish crowns of the seventeenth century are scarce to extremely rare, likely a reflection of the poverty of the king's government.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 22.27 g, 0.671 fine silver, this specimen 20.80 g.

Catalog reference: Dav-3581; KM-285; Hede-113C; Sieg-59.3; Schou-26; Aagaard-M61-1; Bruun-6703.
