SB924-1049r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1049 in Stack's Bowers sale of the L. E. Bruun Collection (Copenhagen, September 2024), where it sold for €10,800 (about US$11,969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Vibrantly Toned and Nearly Mint Christian IV Speciedaler, DENMARK. Speciedaler, 1647. Gluckstadt Mint. Christian IV. NGC AU-58. Mintmaster: Jacob Schwieger (IS). A highly detailed strike combined with a wonderful iridescent toning over a shimmering luster makes this example stand out among others." Gluckstadt, a town on the Elbe downstream of the city of Hamburg, was founded in 1617 by the king of Denmark and later made the capital of the duchy of Holstein, which he ruled. This speciedaler was struck 1644-48 and accompanied a double speciedaler (Dav-3669). Christian IV (r. 1588-1648) had a long but not particularly successful reign. Denmark lost the Torstenson War and had to cede Jämtland, Härjedalen, Idre, Särna, the Baltic Sea islands of Gotland and Ösel, and the province of Halland in 1645.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.97 g, 0.888 fine silver, 43 mm diameter, this specimen 28.74 g.
