Künker sale 352, lot 2308

This specimen was lot 2308 in Künker sale 352 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €8,000 (about US$11,134 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"REICHSGOLDMÜNZEN, DANZIG, 25 Gulden 1923. R Von polierten Stempeln, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. Erworben 1938 bei der Firma Helbing, München. (Germany, unified gold coinage of the empire, free city of Danzig, twenty-five gulden of 1923. Rare, struck using polished dies, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

History does not record if these were seriously intended to circulate but none are known worn. The type was very elusive until recently, when a hoard of the 1930 date appeared. Danzig, long part of Prussia and then Germany, was briefly independent 1919-39. Annexed by the Nazis, it fell to Poland in 1945 and was renamed Gdansk.

Recorded mintage: 800 plus 200 proofs.

Specification: 7.99 g, 0.917 fine gold, 0.235 troy oz AGW (same standard as a British sovereign).
