Künker sale 294, lot 4474

This specimen was lot 4474 in Künker sale 294 (Osnabrück, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €650 (about US$876 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DANZIG, 10 Pfennig 1920. R Fast vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. Bernhard Terletzki. (free city of Danzig, ten pfennig of 1920. Scarce, about extremely fine.)"

This 10 pfennige piece was issued in the aftermath of World War One as the Free City of Danzig was getting organized. Its crude design and zinc fabric suggest that it is notgeld rather than an official issue. Two types exist. This specimen realized over double the catalog value.

Recorded mintage: 124,000 plus 876,000 of KM Tn1.

Specification: zinc.

Catalog reference: KM Tn2, J. 1D1b.
