Dahomey 1971 5000 francs

This specimen was lot 2224 in Goldberg sale 91 (Los Angeles, June 2016), where it sold for $928.25. The catalog description^[1] noted, "Dahomey. 5000 Francs, 1971 NGC PF67 UC. Five water buffalos. NGC graded Proof 67 Ultra Cameo." Dahomey was renamed the Republic of Benin in 1975. The animals depicted herein are much more likely to be Cape buffalo, which are actually native to Africa, rather than water buffalo, a domesticated beast of Asian origin. Gold 2,500, 10,000 and 25,000 francs were issued in 1971, the only gold issues for that country.
