Cyprus 1879 1/4 piastre
This specimen was lot 42689 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "CYPRUS. 1/4 Piastre, 1879. PCGS MS-64 BN Gold Shield. Possessing exceptional luster in the fields with a nearly invisible planchet abnormality that runs across the obverse surfaces being all that stands in the way of the coveted Gem (MS-65) grade." The SCWC lists this type for 1879-87, 1895-98 where it was struck in moderate numbers along with half piastres and one piastres, all in bronze. Cyprus, seized from the Turks by the British in 1878, was given a quasi-sterling coinage where nine piastres = one shilling.
Recorded mintage: 150,000 plus a few proofs.
