Curacao 1822 stuiver
This specimen was lot 1321 in Classical Numismatic Group's sale of the Lissner Collection (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $423.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "CARIBBEAN TERRITORIES, Curaçao. Dutch. Wilhelm I. King of the Netherlands, 1813-1840. AR Stuiver. Utrecht mint. Dated 1822. In NGC encapsulation graded MS 63. Superbly toned choice uncirculated specimen with full luster. Extremely rare this choice. Ex Ray Byrne Collection (J. Peters 78, 13 June 1975), lot 221." The stuiver, a Dutch denomination, traded at six for a real or 48 to the peso (before 1801). After 1801, during the British occupation, the stuiver was lowered to 72 to the peso. This billon issue was struck in the USA (KM 24.1) and the Utrecht mint (KM 24.2). Curaçao, like many islands in the Caribbean, suffered from a chronic shortage of coin as absentee planters pulled profits out of the islands. In 1838, Dutch gulden of William II were cut into quarters to serve as small change.
Recorded mintage: 360,000 (KM 24.1) plus 167,007 (KM 24.2).
Specification: 15.5 mm diameter, .300 fine silver, 0.81 g (KM 24.1) or 0.69 g (KM 24.2), this specimen Ø15 mm, 0.68 g, 6h axis.
