The first specimen was lot 1223 in Ponterio sale 173 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $646. The catalog description[1] noted, "CURACAO. 1/4 Gulden, ND (1838). Toned. Countermark VERY FINE, host coin NGC VG-10." The second specimen was lot 126 in Schulman auction 388 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €3,000 (about US$4,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Driekantje of 25 cent (4), NEDERLANDS WEST-INDIE / THE DUTCH WEST-INDIES - Driekantje of 25 cent (4) z.j. (1838), Silver, WILLEM I 1816-1840, CURACAO Op 1 Gulden 1821 Utrecht. 4 stuks tezamen de gehele gulden vormend. 1/4 deel van de Nederlandse gulden periode Willem I. Ingestempeld met een C. Uit de Zeeuwse Leeuw collectie. Als complete set uitermate zeldzaam! Zeer fraai +. (Set of four cut quarters of a Netherlands 1821 gulden of William I, each piece countermarked with a "C" for Curaçao. From the Zeeland Lion collection, extremely rare as a complete set, very fine or better.)"

The second specimen was offered again as lot 1101 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $4,800. Curaçao, like many islands in the Caribbean, suffered from a chronic shortage of coin as absentee planters pulled profits out of the islands. In 1838, Dutch gulden of William II were cut into quarters to serve as small change.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.893 fine silver, 2.3-2.7 g.

Catalog reference: Scho. 1388; Maill. 2e suppl. G.9; Pridm. fig. 29; KM-27.
