Curacao (1810) 3 reaal
This specimen was lot 23464 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $4,993.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "Dutch Colonial 3 Reaal ND (c. 1810), VF20 NGC Bostonian Collection, nicely toned with a deeply applied 5-petaled rose countermark on a dentilated 1/4 cut of Spanish 8 Reales. Very rare type - do not confuse with the more common KM13 which utilized a 1/5 cut of an 8 Reales. Sold with two collector tags including one for a Bank Leu sale in October of 1990, Lot 950." Curaçao, like many islands in the Caribbean, suffered from a chronic shortage of coin as absentee planters pulled profits out of the islands. In 1838, Dutch gulden of William II were cut into quarters to serve as small change.
