This type was struck in the United States for Cuba in 1953 to commemorate the centennial of José Martí, hero of Cuban independence. The type is common today. The issue was accompanied by a peso (KM 29), silver 25 centavos (KM 27) and silver fifty centavos (KM 28).
Recorded mintage: 50,000,000 plus 100 proofs.
Specification: 2.3 g, brass, 17 mm diameter, designed by Esteban Valdarrama.
