This specimen was lot 42 in Scotsman's Midwest Summer Sale (St. Louis, July 2012), where it sold for $____. The catalog description noted, "Costa Rica - 1922 2-colones PCGS MS-67. Spectacular quality distinguishes this 1922 2-colones, immediately evident by the golden satiny luster that glides effortlessly through the fields. Magnification brings out unusually strong details, especially on the reverse where the waves in the water are all fully defined. As is the case with U.S. gold, Costa Rican gold commonly shows up only with abrasions (if not wear), and it is unusual to locate such a pristine, high-grade type coin. A great opportunity for the world coin collector!" This type was struck for Costa Rica in 1897, 1900 and 1915-26. A similar design featuring the bust of Christopher Columbus appeared on the gold five, ten and twenty colones, all of which are much scarcer than the denomination shown here. Costa Rica officially switched from the peso to the colon in 1897, which currency was reformed again in 1917 and 1920.
