This type was struck at the Heaton mint for Costa Rica 1889-92. The type is not rare in circulated condition and is the last ten centavos piece struck under the peso system. Costa Rica officially switched from the peso to the colon in 1897, which currency was reformed again in 1917 and 1920. This specimen was lot 2950 in Stephen Album sale 41 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2021), where it sold for $144. The catalog description[1] noted, "COSTA RICA: Republic, AR 10 centavos, 1890, KM-129, struck at the Heaton Mint, Birmingham, NGC graded MS64."
