The specimen shown was lot 1162 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Costa Rica, 50 centavos, 1890GW. Lightly cleaned UNC that is starting to retone, nice strike." This type was struck 1880-90 and is rather scarce today as many were counterstamped in 1923 to raise their value to one colon. An overdate, 1890/80, is recorded for the year.
Recorded mintage: 58,000.
Specification: 12.5 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 12.7 grams.
