The first specimen was lot 35 in Scotsman's Midwest Summer Sale (St. Louis, July 2012), where it sold for $____. The catalog description noted, "Costa Rica - 1875-GW type-3 5-peso AU. A difficult type, this an example struck on the smaller planchet size of 1873-5. It is referenced as "type-3" in the consignor's original notes. This coin shows off trivial hints of reflectivity next to the upraised details, and the considerable remaining luster recommends it for the AU grade level. Trivial marks and hairlines scarcely detract at all." This type was struck 1873-75 and is much scarcer than the preceding type (KM 114).
