This specimen was lot 23422 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold 10 Pesos 1872-GW, XF40 NGC Mayer Collection, an appealing example of this scarcer date with nearly full mint luster and well-struck details. A premium coin for this designation with an important pedigree." Costa Rica officially switched from the peso to the colon in 1897, which currency was reformed again in 1917 and 1920. This type was struck 1870-72.
