This specimen was lot 917 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 27 (Winter Park, FL, May 2020), where it sold for $1,011.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Costa Rica, 5 centavos, 1872GW, NGC F 15. Crude strike with flatness at top on obverse, weak leaves and die-crack on reverse, deeply rainbow toned all over, still a competent example for this scarce date. NGC #2814369-004." This type was struck 1865, 1869-75 and 1872 is the key date. Costa Rica officially switched from the peso to the colon in 1897, which currency was reformed again in 1917 and 1920.
