This specimen was lot 2156 in Goldberg sale 34 (Beverly Hills, February 2006), where it sold for $7,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "Costa Rica. Escudo, 1833-CR-E. Sun over mountain peaks. Reverse: Tree. Fine." This type was struck in Costa Rica in 1828, 1833 and 1844-49 in sufficient numbers that it is somewhat available today. The type was also struck in Guatemala 1824-25 (KM 6). The SCWC files this coin under the Central American Republic. This federation was an attempt to unite all the former Spanish provinces of Central America into one country but collapsed amid recrimination and civil war.
