Eliasberg lot 1658
Costa Rica 1828 8 escudos rev Eliasberg 1658.jpg

This specimen was lot 1658 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $29,900. The catalog description[1] noted,

"1828 F 8 escudos. CR mint. MS-62 (NGC). Radiant sun over five mountains, legends around, date below/ Ceiba tree divides denomination, legends around, assayer's mark and mintmark below. Bright yellow gold with strong lustre and rich orange highlights. Exceptionally well struck, with full detail in each leaf of the Ceiba tree on the reverse and excellent detail throughout. A few trivial hairlines and widely scattered short scratches are noted but do not detract from superb eye appeal. A rare issue and fantastically popular, but most advanced collections contain pieces graded below Extremely Fine. The Hammel piece was a lovely piece, called AU and technically very similar to this in grade, though not as well struck at the trunk and base of the tree as this example. It sold for $9,500 in 1982. A world-class specimen that should be ranked among the finest known of this first Costa Rican onza, issued under the Central American Republic. This date called 'rara' (rare) by Calicó. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

This type, listed by the SCWC under the Central American Republic, was minted in Costa Rica 1828-37 and in Guatemala 1824-25 (KM 8). All are rare and expensive.
