This specimen is one of a type struck at the Heaton mint 1886 only. This specimen was part of lot 31967 in Heritage sale 3040 (Chicago, April 2015), which sold for $493.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic Lot of 25 Minors, Denominations, dates, and grades vary. Close inspection is a must." It is essentially worthless in the condition shown and one wonders why Heritage included it in the lot.
Recorded mintage: 12,000,000.
Specification: copper-nickel.
Catalog reference: KM 182.
