Colombia 1886 5 centavos
This specimen is one of a type struck for Colombia in 1886 only. It replaced the last five centavos struck in silver (KM 174). This coin is listed very cheaply in the SCWC but, like many minors from Colombia, very difficult to find in nice condition. This date exists in several reverse varieties. The country adopted its current name, "Republica de Colombia," in 1886. Five centavos coins from the later period are all base metal. The second specimen was lot 44432 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 5 Centavos, 1886. MS-64 (PCGS). Large top bar on '5'. Well struck and fully lustrous with pervasive golden to olive toning. A gem example of the type. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins."
Recorded mintage: 1,000,000.
Specification: copper-nickel.
Catalog reference: KM-183.1; Restrepo-362.2 (second specimen), 183.2 (first specimen), 184.
