Colombia 1862-P 1/2 real
This specimen was lot 44236 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $85. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1/2 Real, 1862/48. Popayan Mint. VF-35 (PCGS). One year type, interesting 1862/48 overdate. Even wear with dark gray toning. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." This half real, anachronistic by 1862, was originally intended to be a decimal coin wherein ten reales = one peso. It was superseded by the half décimo after 1853, in turn superseded by the five centavos after 1872. The 1862/48 overdate is slightly more common than the regular date and accompanied a two reales (KM 134), also struck from obsolete dies.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 1.25 g, 0.900 fine silver.
