This specimen was lot 3631 in Goldberg sale 70 (Los Angeles, September 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Colombia. 8 Escudos, 1791-NR JJ. Charles IV. Uniformed bust right, Carol IIII. Reverse: Crowned Hapsburg arms within chain of the Order of the Golden Fleece. NGC graded About Uncirculated, Details (Obverse Damage)." The type was struck in Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1791-1808. Nuevo Reino and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common. Assayer JJ is recorded for 1774-1808.
