This specimen was lot 29272 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $4,700. The catalog description[1] noted, "Charles II gold 2 Escudos 1709-(SF) MS63 NGC, Santa Fe mint. Posthumous issue of Charles II under Philip V. A particularly impressive and desirable example of this scarce and very popular cob type, in attractively colored Choice Mint State condition and showing a full 4-digit date. A perfect candidate to represent this type in a high grade set." This type was issued from Bogotá 1701-13. Specimens with legible dates are worth double those without. This type comes without a mintmark or assayer initials. Many have been made into jewelry and sold as "pirate gold."
