Colombia 1641-NR A 2 escudos
This specimen was lot 79 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 35 (Winter Park, FL, May 2024), where it sold for $4,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "COLOMBIA, Bogotá, gold cob 2 escudos, 1641, assayer A below mintmark NR to left, NGC MS 62, finest known in NGC census. Choice full cross (albeit off-center) with clear date 1641 (possibly 1/0) in legend, large ringlets in tressure-dimples unlike other known examples of this date, full but slightly doubled shield with clear mintmark and bold assayer A to left, rich gold color all over." This type was struck 1628-55 for Philip IV. Most survivors lack legible dates and therefore many dates are not listed (including the 1641) altho the Santa Fé mint probably operated continuously during that period. This specimen was offered again as lot 30061 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $.
