The first specimen was lot 55029 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. Peso, 1915-So. Santiago Mint. NGC MS-65+." This type, struck 1915 and 1917, is not at all common; still, this example realized nineteen times the catalog value. The previous type of 1910 was 12 g and the succeeding type of 1921-27 was 9 g but only 0.500 fine. Oscar Roty's defiant condor, first used in 1895, appeared on virtually all Chilean silver and copper-nickel coins until 1940.
Recorded mintage: 6,032,000.
Specification: 9 g, 0.720 fine silver, 27.5 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-152.4.
