Chile 1891-So peso

This is a peso minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1891. It is a scarce date of a common type struck 1868-91 but nice examples are always worth a premium. This specimen was lot 23868 in Heritage sale 3015 (Long Beach, September 2011), where it sold for $2,990. The catalog description^[1] noted,

"Republic Peso 1891, MS62 NGC, very bright and attractive with razor sharp details. Very scarce date and one of the finest known. Ex: Heritage Sale 387. From The Tarapaca Collection of Chilean Coins."

An overdate, 1891/0, is noted for the year.

Recorded mintage: 109,000.

Specification: 25 g, 0.900 fine silver, .723 troy oz ASW, reeded edge, 37 mm diameter.
