Sed50-0849r.jpg

This specimen was lot 849 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $7,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, essai 1 peso, 1894, very rare, NGC AU 58 (Colección Val y Mexía Label), finest and only example in NGC census. Very light rainbow toning and only light high-point wear (no marks or hairlines of note), with ESSAI in legend and engraver's name O. Roty scribed onto rock, first example we have seen, with no comparable sales in the recent past, one of only six known according to KM. Pedigreed to the Val y Mexia Collection." Oscar Roty's defiant condor, first used in 1895, appeared on virtually all Chilean silver and copper-nickel coins until 1940. This design was used on the production issue of 1895-97 and we have used the specification of that type below.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 20 g, 0.835 fine silver, .537 troy oz ASW, 35 mm diameter, designed by Oscar Roty.

Catalog reference: KM-Pn24.
