Chile 1849-So ML real
This specimen was lot 1004 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, 1 real, 1849 ML, NGC MS 62 (Colección Val y Mexía Label). Light rainbow toning (mostly gold and magenta) over luster, second finest in the NGC census behind a single MS 65, better date for the series (scarce). Pedigreed to the Val y Mexía Collection." This type was struck 1843-50. The design, with a condor tearing the chains of slavery, is also found on half real, 2 reales and 8 reales coins of the period. This design is very popular with collectors and brings quite a bit more than the rather low catalog values. Overdates 1848/7/6 and 1848/7 are recorded for the year. This example realized six times the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3 g, 0.902 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-94.2.
