The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic 8 Reales 1848-JM, AU55 NGC, an attractive and fully original piece with boldly struck features and luster in the legends. Very scarce type in this premium grade." The type was struck in Santiago, Chile in 1837-40 (KM 96.1) and 1848-49 (KM 96.2). The attractive condor design, which superseded the famous volcano peso, puts this South American crown in high demand.
