Ponterio sale 150, lot 9248

This coin was lot 9248 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $5,060. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 8 Reales, 1849-ML. RARE in this grade. Attractive CHOICE UNCIRCULATED." The type was struck in Santiago, Chile in 1837-40 (KM 96.1) and 1848-49 (KM 96.2). The attractive condor design, which superseded the famous volcano peso, puts this South American crown in high demand.
