Chile 1847-So IJ real
This specimen was lot 1003 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 39 (Winter Park, FL, May 2026), where it sold for $4,500. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE, Santiago, 1 real, 1847 IJ, NGC MS 62 (Colección Val y Mexía Label). Superb luster with almost prooflike details, very light rainbow toning, second finest in NGC census behind a single MS 66, a date that does not come up with frequency. Pedigreed to the Val y Mexía Collection." This type was struck 1843-50. The design, with a condor tearing the chains of slavery, is also found on half real, 2 reales and 8 reales coins of the period. This design is very popular with collectors and brings quite a bit more than the rather low catalog values. This example realized seven times the catalog value.
Recorded mintage: unknown but the scarcest date.
Specification: 3 g, 0.902 fine silver, 19 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM-94.2.
