This eight reales was minted in Santiago, Chile, in 1840. It is a scarce and popular type coin and the 1849 issue is the last eight reales struck in Chile. The 1848-49 eight reales is slightly lighter (26.6 g) and smaller in diameter and is accorded a different catalog number (KM 96.2).
