Chile 1839-So IJ escudo
This specimen was lot 31239 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $352.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Republic gold Escudo 1839 So-IJ, VF25 NGC. An attractive coin for the grade, with several interesting diagonal depressions that run through Liberty and her pedestal. The first year of this seven-year type issued as a result of the decree of January 17, 1839. Ex: 'Colonel' E.H.R. Green; Green Estate' Partnership of Eric P Newman/B.G. Johnson." This "standing liberty" design, struck 1839-51, succeeded the "hand on book" type (KM 99, struck 1838 only). The SCWC records the weight of this coin as 3.3 g; earlier colonial one escudos were nominally 3.38 g. None of the recorded mintages are large.
