This specimen was lot 51391 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHILE. 1/4 Real, 1808-So. Santiago Mint. Charles IV. NGC AU-53. A wholesome example bearing only light marks and circulation. Lovely amber-gray tones appear throughout amid plenty of underlying luster. From the EMO Collection. Privately purchased from Freeman Craig." The Santiago mint experimented with several designs for the quarter real 1790-93 before settling on the familiar lion and castle type in 1796. It is one of a series minted 1792-1808 for Charles IV and 1810-17 for Ferdinand VII. A hoard of uncirculated 1817's has been dispersed but the other dates are tough to find.

Recorded mintage: 57,000, including an 1808/6 overdate.
