Chihli (or Zhili) was a province originally incorporating the present-day capital city of Beijing. The word ‘Zhihli’ translates to ‘centrally ruled’, in other words, the region was under the directed administration of the Emperor rather than functioning as a normal province. Chihli had several mints, the earliest beginning operations in 1645 AD. The specimen shown was lot 60074 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $15,535. The catalog description[1] noted, “CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 1 Mace 4.4 Candareens (20 Cents), Year 31 (1905). Lightly toned. 輕度包漿。NGC AU-58. Ex: The Frank Robinson Collection."
