Chihli (or Zhili) was a province originally incorporating the present-day capital city of Beijing. The word ‘Zhihli’ translates to ‘centrally ruled’, in other words, the region was under the direct administration of the Emperor rather than functioning as a normal province. Chihli had several mints, the earliest beginning operations in 1645 AD. The specimen shown was lot 21139 in the Ponterio sale 165 (Hong Kong, April 2012), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 5 Cash, CD (1906). NGC EF-40 BN." The second specimen was lot 55081 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $312. The catalog description[2] noted, "CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 5 Cash, CD (1906). PCGS AU-53 Gold Shield. A boldly struck and pleasing SCARCE type, with even, dark chocolate brown patina."

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper.

Catalog reference: Y-9c; Hsu-417; CCC-314; Duan-1129.
