Ceylon 1925 25 cents
This specimen was lot 23341 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $80. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. 25 Cents, 1925. Calcutta Mint. PCGS MS-64 Gold Shield. Pop: 2; none graded finer by PCGS. An attractive, sharply struck and lustrous coin with a sheen of olive to almond toning." This type was struck 1919-22 and 1925-26 and is not rare. It is lower in fineness than the previous type (KM 105) struck until 1917. It was converted to nickel-brass in 1943. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.
