Stack's Bowers 2021 NYINC sale, lot 23340

This specimen was lot 23340 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (Newport Beach, CA, January 2021), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[1] noted, "CEYLON. 25 Cents, 1922. PCGS MS-63 Gold Shield. A fully struck and very original coin. The slightly greenish cast to the toning is due to the debased silver (0.550 fine) used." This type was struck 1919-22 and 1925-26 and is not rare. It is lower in fineness than the previous type (KM 105) struck until 1917. It was converted to nickel-brass in 1943. Ceylon, famous for tea, attained its independence in 1948 after the British left India and is now known as Sri Lanka.

Recorded mintage: 1,211,000 plus proofs.

Specification: 2.92 g, 0.550 fine silver.
